A trip to Kidepo National game park should be planned in a tactical way. One of the reasons is the long drive and second one is the excitement one feels whenever a trip to Kidepo is coming. Kidepo is less known and not visited by many people due to its remote location. Situated about 500km from the capital Kampala, Kidepo is close to the Sudanese boarder and it is by far the most beautiful National park in Uganda. The landscape is amazing. As you drive there, the question is where to pass?. There are more than one route to take but which one is the shortest? Let us drive through Gulu, Kitgum, Katrum and reach Kidepo National park. On day one, it is a must to start very early say 6am. This gives you a chance to beat the distance and get there by 7pm of course including stopovers. The plan is to be in Gulu town by 11am , Kitgum town 1pm and reach the promised land (Kidepo) at roughly 6-7pm. There will be no activity on this day apart from getting there late in the evening, rest and nurse yourself with a cold beer. Day two will be waking up in a very beautiful place which you might not have seen having arrived in the dark. First thing to do is the game drive in the morning which I’ve found the best in all National parks in Uganda. Straight from your accommodation, you drive to the lions as the rangers will have first spotted them by use of binoculars before you leave. Actually game viewing starts as soon as you get out of your banda because there are animals all over the place. Zebras, bufallos, elephants, antelopes etc come close to the lodge to say good morning to the visitors. The game drive takes 3-4hrs and you can surely make a plan a few hours after the game drive to leave as this will help you to reduce on the driving the next day.
Please bear in mind that it is 6 days on this trip and the activities we want to do are distanced. Driving after the game drive creates some space and time to reach the next destination which is Sipi Falls in this case. Normally I advise my guests to drive to Moroto town to reach Sipi early the next day. It is not an over night drive but driving half way towards the next place on the itinerary. The magnificent scenery in this area (Karamoja) the people and things you see will not allow you to sleep while in the car. However exhausted you are this region keeps you entertained throughout your journey. You reach Moroto town late evening and plan yet to start early the following day. If there is still time you can do a little hike on mount Moroto.
Day three like the other days in this region will be exciting as we drive through a flat area desert like and reaching Sipi Falls early afternoon and relaxing a little to do a hike to the falls later in the day. Sipi falls is situated in Kapchorwa district which has the highest altitude in Uganda. While in Sipi, you have a view of the Karamoja region which you can see down in the valley while on the steep slopes on Mount Elgon. Some times I don’t know how to describe Uganda because every part of the country is beautiful. For this part of the country I will say it is very nice to see. Uganda is a very beautiful country and each place you go has many attractions attached to it. I’ve been a tour guide for many years but each time I have a trip my heart is beaming with excitement and I never get tired of seeing and admiring my country. Uganda is indeed the pearl of Africa. Hiking the falls is very interesting and it takes about 3hrs to see the three major water falls in the area. Day four will be to transfer from Sipi to Jinja to get ready for the white water rafting on day five. Reaching Jinja on day four we drive around to see the goodies in the area which include visiting the starts. There is a spot where Lake Victoria ends and the Nile starts. If anyone has a different view as where the Nile starts from, come and prove it yourself . After seeing the source of River Nile, we go to Bujagali falls which is equally an amazing spot. While in Jinja, you can go back horse riding and bungee jumping. Brace yourself for a 44m high bungee jump if you have the heart. On day five, the greatest experience of white water rafting starts at about 8am. Thank God you are in Uganda to do this and experience it. Water rafting is almost a full day activity taking you miles down the river Nile on an exhilarating experience. The writer once rafted and amazingly does not know how to swim even an inch. I will never do this again even if you promised me to find a sack of gold while rafting. It is breathe taking but was exciting for me. Crashing into mountains of water waves and having our raft flip several times was the craziest/stupid thing I’ve ever done in my life as a non swimmer.
After rafting at about 5pm, everyone is very exhausted and would like to rest. There is an exciting Jinja night life which you can dive into later in the night, crown your day with the various tribes of beer found in this town. Jinja is one of the biggest industrial towns in Uganda. Day six will see us drive back to the noisy city of Kampala where we can do some activities also. The Bahai temple and crafts markets around the city give many options for shopping. Welcome back from Kidepo!!!
