Murchison Falls NP 3 days
Murchison falls National Park is the most popular game park in Uganda with the biggest number of animals. Being the most popular park and closest to Kampala city, it receives a lot of visitors. Driving to Murchison falls takes approximately 5 hours including stopovers. Stopping at the Rhinos at Ziwa ranch is optional and this takes one and a half hours. Usually people like to stop at Masindi town to have some refreshments and then drive on to be in the park minutes later. You are greeted by hundreds of baboons as soon as you enter the park.
On day one, driving starts early at 9am and by 2pm you are already at the place you like to stay. There are few places to stay in this park so booking early is very essential. The most preferred place is Redchilli hideaway mainly because it is cheap and affordable. Other options include Sambiya river lodge, Nile safaris lodge and Para safari lodge which are relatively expensive. On the evening of Day one at about 4pm, you can start the game drive which takes you to the delta the home of lions and elephants. From the start of the game drive, you see antelopes, giraffes, elephants, buffalos, warthogs, different kinds of birds etc and this is the most interesting part of the drive. As the sun goes down, animals like to come in the open to graze or hunt for dinner.
This is the right time to see lions but I will not guarantee one hundred percent chances to see them. Lions are at times shy and like to hide or sometimes hunt in areas far from tracks where cars pass. It is likely on a good day to see a bunch of them or none on a bad day. Just pray for good luck every time you go on the game drive. For the other animals it is possible to see them all the time but lions and especially leopards are very rare. There is a fantastic view while on the game drive with a splendid landscape which includes the Blue Mountains of Congo. You will see coexistence of the highest order where fishermen lay their fishing nets in a forest of hippos. As you enjoy the drive, the sun goes down near dark, you start the journey back to the hotel to rest and take a cold Ugandan beer. If you are staying across the river from the game drive, you need to catch the ferry to the Southern side as it stops operating at 7pm.
Day two starts with a Ugandan coffee at the restaurant to warm up for the boat trip which takes you to a great view of the falls. The boat trip is also an amazing tour of the wildlife whereby you get to see crocs and hippos at a close range. There are thousands of hippos along the river as you cruise to see the Murchison falls. You get nice shots of animals that come to the river banks to drink water and at the crocodile bar, you will see a lot of them others enjoying fresh air with their wide jaws open like church doors. On the boat cruise, you may decide to take a hike which takes you to the top of the falls. This is optional and will require you to have a lot of energy because it is very steep to make it up to the falls or just plan to do a lot of gym then you will manage the hike. After the boat trip, you will have time to relax, read a book, drink a beer or plan another game drive later in the evening if time is your friend.
Day three depends on how fast you want to be in Kampala. The only activity on this day is visiting the top of the falls which concludes the trip. Generally speaking, there is no definite order/ formula of doing a trip to Murchison falls. You can choose to do top of the falls first or last, do the game drive on day one or day two or boat trip on day one/ last day. The most important thing is to have a ticket for the boat trip otherwise the other activities can be done in any order. At the falls, you will have the best view of the falls ever. Don’t be mistaken to think you are seeing the Niagara Falls. It is very beautiful at the top of the falls with the roaring sound of the river and a constant waterfall spray.
There is a little hike you can do here and this takes you to the view point where you can see the falls at different angles. After watching the falls you can then embark on the journey back to Kampala.
